The Importance of Backing Up Files and Folders
Nov 30th
In this electronic age our computers have become the most common place to store a multitude of personal information. We store our financial records, letters, photographs, music, personal videos, telephone contacts and work related data and much more on our computer hard drives.
What happens when our computers fail, or more specifically our hard drives have some kind of mechanical failure? All those photos of the kid’s birthday parties, holiday pictures, spreadsheets full of household budgets and all the music we have downloaded become irretrievable, without seeking expert help.
In the simplest of cases if a file or folder is inadvertently deleted, then providing the recycle bin has not been emptied then restoring is a simple click of the mouse. If however the recycle bin has been emptied then there is software available that can retrieve this deleted data from the hard drive.

Files, Folders and Defrag – Help Organise Your PC
What is a file?
A file on your computer is much like a file that you would keep in your filing cabinet. Each file has a unique name and is kept in a specific location. Each computer file has a three character extension which is separated from the file name by a period. The extension is often hidden however there is an option in Windows to display this if you wish. The extension relates to a specific program. This tells the computer which program to open it with. For example, a file extension xls or xlsx relates to Microsoft Excel.
Some file extensions, such as .mp3 can be opened in a variety of programs.

Computer Viruses and Malware – What are they?
Oct 20th
I often get asked what is a computer virus, how does it differ from a worm or Trojan and how do they get into my computer? Please find below my article, giving you a brief explanation of these terms and how easily they can infect your system.
What is a Computer Virus?
Computer viruses are annoying at best and can be extremely destructive at worst. A computer virus is a piece of code which can attach itself to one of your files or programs, enabling it to spread to other computers infecting as it goes. This causes damage to files, software and hardware.
Computer viruses can range in severity in the same way as an organic virus. With an organic virus, unless kept in complete isolation, it usually spreads through human interaction. The difference is, (other than the obvious) a computer virus needs human interaction to enable it to spread, such as sending an email or sharing a file.

PC Performance – How to Speed Up Your Computer in 2 Minutes
Oct 13th
One of the questions I get asked regularly is, what is the internet cache, how does it affect my computer and do I need to do anything with it?
The internet cache, often referred to as “Temporary Internet Files,” contains a travel log of the places that you have visited. The purpose of this is to aid in speeding up web browsing by keeping a record of all that you have seen, heard or downloaded from the internet which includes web pages, images, sounds and internet cookies. So the next time you visit the same site, your browser will load all the information that is stored in your cache instead of downloading it all again, hence speeding up the browser display time.
Now this seems a good idea except when the cache gets full and there is a shortage of disk space available to store these files. You then may notice a drop in performance. This can also cause a security issue if you automatically save passwords. I tend never to let the browser save any passwords for this reason.
All of the internet browsers have the facility to enable you to clear the internet cache. In fact most of the recent versions allow you to clear the cache automatically when you shut it.
Below I will explain how to clear the cache for two of the most popular internet browsers, Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. They both have their pros and cons, however, I tend to use Mozilla Firefox for everyday browsing. More >
